Gentrification — I’ve seen it everywhere I’ve lived from New York to Cambodia, and everywhere in between. We all have. And I’ve struggled to know what to feel about it. Of course, in some ways, it is a signal of progress. In other ways, it can be a ruthless sweeping away of the old to make room for the unknown. If nothing else, the fact that it is now happening in a once backroad area of Siem Reap, on the “other” side of the river, away from the commercial centre and the expensive hotels, shows that modernisation has indeed come to Siem Reap. What it means for the people who already live and work there, is yet to be seen. Take a look:

It can be a double edge sword can’t it! Have to admit, when I was in areas of Thailand, I struggled with it too! I don’t think it’s always a bad thing but I do think there are usually winners and there are usually losers!
