Six years ago, I founded a theatre production company dedicated to giving new theatre artists their first piece of luck. That company was called CurvingRoad. Over the next six years we went on to produce plays both in London’s West End and Fringe, and mentor dozens of new artists looking for their first break. I was the Artistic Director, and I loved every minute of it. But then, about two years ago, my dear friend, Sonja Rein, who held the role of Executive Producer, moved away and I was left with a baby I couldn’t really take care of. As my own writing career became busier and led me further and further away across the planet, I knew something would have to be done. But I began to wonder: Who would want to take it over? Why would anyone want it? Then I realised that CurvingRoad had something special besides a great track record and a long list of supporters. It had UK charitable status which, believe, is as good as gold. So I started to look around London to see if there was some other theatre company who might be compatible with mine, who I could work with, whose own work I would be proud to be a part of.
After a long search and many conversations, I chose Theatre Delicatessen. I am very happy to say that I have backed the right horse. The first joint production of CurvingRoad and Theatre Delicatessen is now on stage — an amazing, immersive production of Henry V set within the basement of the old BBC Radio building at 35 Marylebone High Street. Of course she’d say it’s amazing, you might be thinking. Well, don’t take my word for it. Look here and here, not to mention 4 Stars in The Times. And then, watch this from the BBC.
And so I want to share this with you. For anyone of my blog readers who would like to go to the show — it runs through 30 June, all details are here — email boxoffice@theatredelicatessen and quote “Writer” and you’ll get a ticket at the greatly discounted price of £10. You might even see me there. Enjoy! You’re in for a treat.
This all sounds fabulous, Sue. Sometimes I wish I still lived in UK, but Finland has its compensations. We´ll be in Londonon on September 7 and 8, will there be any production running at that time? Are you planning to be at the poetry book fair this year? We´re going, and Martti Hynynen will be with us.
