It’s been a bit of a difficult week on the home front, so I was doubly pleased when my copy of Where Rockets Burn Through came in the post. This is a collection of contemporary science fiction poems from the UK edited by the poet, Russell Jones, and published by the good people at Penned in the Margins. I am thrilled to have two of my poems included and to find myself between the covers with some of Britain’s most interesting poets, some of whom, I’m happy to say, are also friends.
I don’t usually think of my writing as falling within the science fiction genre, but it is most certainly often science inspired, and that ‘s how I fell onto Russell’s radar. I think it was over two years ago when he approached me about the possibility of putting this collection together. These things take so long and so much work. But the finished product is very much worth the wait. The collection is divided into four sections: A Home in Space, Hold Hands Among the Atoms, From the Video Box (which is where my poems can be found), and The Ages. As the jacket blurb says:
BLASTING INTO THE FUTURE, across alien worlds and distant galaxies, fantastic technologies and potential threats to humanity, Where Rockets Burn Through brings science fiction and poetry together in one explosive, genre-busting collection. Jump in, strap up and switch on the photon cannon….
I can’t wait. And if you want to come along for the ride, do get yourself a copy here.
Thanks for blogging about the book, Sue! I hope you enjoy it. Your poems are some of those that I chose to demonstrate the breadth available to sci-fi poets: not necessarily what someone might think of when they think “sci-fi”, but they reconsider and speculate about the current world with a technological edge, unravelling ideas on how science might affect our perception of the present, past and potentially the future
Thanks, Russell. I really do think the book is something special. I sat down yesterday and started to read it from page one on through to the end. It all works so well together. You should be proud of it, and I’m proud to be in it!
Sue, I have a copy winging its way to me already, am doubly delighted that I will find your poems in there!
