Kuala Lumpur was the last stop on my SE Asian book tour. In 36 hours I had two events. One evening I drove about an hour out of town to the campus of The University of Nottingham, Kuala Lumpur. There I was hosted by the writer, Shivani Siguranathan, and was the guest at a literary evening for their new degree program in English literature and creative writing. There, I got to speak not only about Out of the Ruins and my teaching in Cambodia, but also about my life as a writer, my process, the vicissitudes of the publishing industry, etc etc. I do find it inspiring to talk to budding writers. It helps remind me about what I’m doing here in the first place.

While in KL, I also got to chat with one of my favourite radio interviewers, and one with the craziest name in the world, Umapagan Ampikaipakan. I had been interviewed by him three years ago when I was promoting my first Cambodian novel, A Clash of Innocents. So it was great to follow up with a new book and a new discussion. He asked all sorts of very insightful and probing questions about Cambodia today, and about how it and I have both changed in the intervening years between books.
